Getting Lynched

The David Lynch MA in Film course has opened its doors to enrolment. As one might expect from the director of Eraserhead and Blue Velvet, the art of film à Lynch isn’t that straightforward. OK, the course does promise to cover all aspects of filmmaking, but with the ‘profound addition’ of transcendental meditation as taught by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, writes Root Wilson*.

“The big secret to great filmmaking, I believe, lies within in the big treasury within us all,” says Lynch in true Lynchian style. “This is a truly great programme.”

In fact, Lynch is claiming it as the first and only consciousness-based film education available anywhere (likely true). The idea is that students get to learn about deep story and the entire process of filmmaking while also developing their creative potential. And that emerging filmmaking creativity within (in the treasury) will be accessed through daily individual and group practice of the TM technique.

The David Lynch MA is promising to pull in industry experts, academics and professionals across all areas of film production and distribution. Cue likely appearances from Bill Borden, producer of Mission Impossible 3, script doctor Dara Marks, Peter Farrelly, writer/director of Dumb & Dumber and There’s Something About Mary, plus Jeremy Kagen, Director of Heroes and The Big Fix. And more, for sure.

For those concerned about financing arrangements, the programme is offering two scholarships in exchange for a flash of talent. For one, there’s the Film Competition Award, with the full- scholarship winner chosen by David Lynch himself. And the Writing Competition Award, which promises $10,000 towards the cost of tuition.

By the way, filming on a new TV series of Twin Peaks started last month. The latest we have is that it will premiere on Showtime sometime in 2017…
